Hijacked!

Biscuit

Greetings. I hijacked this journal since Mom never writes in it anymore. They call me Biscuit. You would not believe the luck I have had with my life. There I was, just a youngster minding my own business, when my so-called family decided to kick me to the curb. I was trying to beg at this place that had a lot of chicken smells, and here comes this SUV with a woman and a couple of older kids. I could tell she was a softy, so I gave her my best "mew" from behind the safety of a lightpost. She stared at me a bit and drove on through the place where the chicken comes out. I decided I had misunderstood, and wandered off to see what the trash held for dinner. All of a sudden there were bright lights shining on me and the woman and the girl-child were tossing me bits of chicken. I got a little too close, and the woman grabbed me by the scruff of the neck. I paniced at first, but she did not hurt me. Within moments I was wrapped in a soft blanket in her arms. I showed my appreciation by mashin on her with my paws (she said I was "makin biscuits"). We were in the car for hours, but it was worth it! You should see the crazy place I live in now!! Mom, as the woman became to me, decided to call me Biscuit. I like her, so that works. I lived in a room by myself for a long time, but Mom and this big "Dad" guy came in to visit all the time. I could smell a few other felines outside the room and occasionally even a canine or 2, but I had no idea who all lived here! I am allowed into the next room where Mom and Dad sleep now, but I have slipped through the next door a few times and tried to say hi to everyone else. It is a wild and crazy jungle, but there is good food to eat and soft beds to lie on and pettin's whenever I want!! Life sure is looking up these days!

'Till next time

Feral Cats

"Every day in shelters across the country cats who are hissy, snarly or frightened are wrongly labeled feral and killed, but Best Friends’ experience in The Great Kitty Rescue has confirmed on a large scale that such cats can be saved with gentle persuasion." Read More...

Great article from Best Friends!

I am so glad that Best Friends is trying to get this word out! Rikki, Tikki, and Tavi would have died at 6 weeks old because they were terrified...now they can't get enough attention. Time, love, and patience...that is all it took.

Biscuit checked out well at the vet - at the visit that led to me quitting my current job (Friday is my last day!! WOOOOO!!) and going to work for my vet! :)
Anyway, here is a picture of the sweet chicken Biscuit!
Biscuit

We decided at the time not to treat his diarrhea but to wait and see if it cleared up with a diet change. That has not happened, so we have to go back soon and get some antibiotics.

Dally

Sorry for the delay in posting. We have pretty much been maintaining the status quo until this weekend.

Dally and the Jungle Boys are doing so well! They have turned into real lovey, sweetie boys. They are scheduled for neuter on Thursday and Friday, along with their final round of shots. Dally had some gassy issues, but the Dr. Bowe said it was likely due to the steroids killing off the natural bacteria in his tummy. We gave him a little fat free vanilla yogurt a couple of times and he seems to be all cleared up. :) He still does not have any external sensation at his sphincter, though, but it does not seem to be too much of an issue. He has bowel control, he just does not always know if there is a litle piece of poo "still hanging." Poor baby - freaked him out the one time I was in the room and he jumped out of the box only to have the little piece of poo jump right after him! I will have to warn whoever ends up adopting him that he uses the box well, it just does not always STAY in the box. Rikki, Tikki and Tavi are wonderful, beautiful, healthy boys. I will update my actual site later this week with more current pictures. http://www.bakerspets.org

The outdoor cat enclosure was finally started this weekend. Many thanks to my dear Matt, my son, and our friends Tom and Abby for coming over to help dig 9 holes 2' deep each through the nasty sticky black clay we have in our backyard. Hopefully we can set posts this coming weekend.

Ren and Moki are still with us. Moki is on schedule for a B-A-T-H this week. She has some issues with not keeping her rear end clean under that adorable puffball tail. :( I may just trim the hair instead. I have to really check it out and see what the problem is. Ren really has to find a new home soon. He is miserable in that front bedroom all alone, but I can't let him out in the main part of the house.

We also have a new addition. I was on my way home from picking up the kids Friday and we pulled through a Chicken Express in Jacksboro, TX to get Toni something to eat. A little tabby kitten peeked out from behind a light post, looked right at me and mewed. We got our food, and drove back around the building to see him. It took us about 5 minutes and a bit of Toni's chicken to get him close eough to catch. He freaked out a bit when I picked him up, but as soon as I snuggled him close, he started making biscuits on my shirt and purring. His name is now Biscuit. He is living in our master bathroom. I am guessing he is about 4 or 5 months old. He looks like he may even have been fixed recently. He has a little bare spot on his testes. He is aggressively affectionate and just as sweet and cuddly as anyone could ask for. He does not have fleas, but he has diarreah - probably from eating greasy chicken or bad quality food, and he is gassy too. Stinky boy. He may also have ear mites - his ears are stinky and itchy. I have to make a vet appointment for him to get checked out. I am going to contact Jacksboro animal control and see if anyone is looking for him. He is just too sweet to NOT belong to someone - unless of course some jackass dumped him there. One of the employees said cats get dumped there all the time. What a crappy world. Still this one baby is safe and warm and fed now. I will post pictures of him later this week. He is marked like Dally, but his face is stuctured like no other cat we have right now.

PETA and HSUS are tyring to kill the NO-Kill movement!

Way to rebuff, Best Friends and San Antonio's Nathan Winograd!

Excerpts:

"[No-kill] sounds very good, but the reality is that it will probably leave some animals to suffer," says PETA’s companion animal spokesperson Daphna Nachminovitch.

But no-kill shelters that don't warehouse animals fill up quickly and are forced to stop taking in new ones. "Now what's their alternative?” said Kim Intino, director of sheltering for the Humane Society of the U.S. The animal likely ends up either in an open-admission facility that does euthanize, or worse, on the streets.

The No-Kill movement is not simply about converting shelter policy to no-kill; it’s about converting an entire community’s policy to support a no-kill philosophy. (with details following)

No Kill is morally superior to killing. To claim otherwise is to abandon the very principles of compassion, caring and kindness that are the underpinnings of this movement’s founding. But take heart, the days when killing was considered kindness are coming to an end. And the dinosaurs of this movement will soon be swept aside.

My limits

  • Aug. 9th, 2007 at 10:07 AM
Dally
I am such a slacker kitty momma. I keep saying I am going to take more pictures of the Jungle Boys, but I keep NOT taking my camera into the foster room! All baby kittens are doing well. They are getting friendlier by the day! I received a wonderful donation from my dentist yesterday to help with medical costs, thank goodness.

The gloriously beautiful Ren is now stuck with 2 names. I call him Renfest, and Matt calls him Refro. He does not care as long as we hold him and squeeze him and pet his widdle head...oops cartoon persona coming out there! But really he is a sweetheart! I need to find other ways to "advertise" him so I can find him a new home. We are determined to get back to 11 cats again before we bring another foster litter back in. That means Puck and Hunter need to go to their new home soon, and then homes need to be found for Moki, Julian, Ren, Dally, Rikki, Tikki, and Tavi. I have finally discovered my limit on cats, which is a good thing! Someday I will get a real sanctuary going and do this full-time, then I can have a higher cat-limit. As long as I have to work away from my babies, I have to keep it under control. I spend about 2 hours every night between litterboxes, food, water, and socializing and that does not include social time spent with my personal cats.

We continue to work on expanding the size of the "territory." 1800 square feet plus a part of the garage is not enough for all the cats - especially when you consider that we keep all the secondary bedrooms and both bathrooms closed off to house fosters and Sable. That leaves 10 cats in the master bedroom, kitchen, and living areas, with access to the garage. Fortunately we have a ton of available vertical territory, and the materials and plans to build an outdoor enclosure that will connect to the house. The vertical spaces have been a big hit. The cats love to run up and down the bookshelf "stairs" we built for them to give them access to overhead plant-ledge type spaces. We added a cat-walk (hehe) over the kitchen connecting 2 such spaces (far enough from food prep areas to not cause problems) and a cat tree allows for ascent or descent at the other end of this overhead playground. The rains here in Texas caused a bit of a deterrent in building the outdoor enclosure, and now the heat is daunting, but I am determined to break ground this weekend. A couple of hours in the mornings each weekend and I should get it done fairly soon.

The next project will be the walls in the foster room. We plan on putting up shelves and cubbies for the cats to climb and play in, and painting the walls something other than beige to brighten things up. :)

Ok - now I have to go back to the real world of a corporate job. Pictures will come soon...really they will!

Hunter, Puck, and Julian finally got neutered last Wednesday. They are all fine, and as playful as ever! The potential adopter for Puck and Julian is starting her paperwork, so with luck they will be able to go home with her this weekend! I will miss sweet Puck. He has the coolest face and is such a love! It will be good for him to be in a home that can give him more attention than we can with our zoo! Now I just need to focus on finding Julian and Moki homes, as well as a new flame-point siamese that we took in late last week.

The siamese goes by the name Ren (formerly Clarence) and is FeLV+, but asymptomatic at 1.5 years old. He is a big sweetheart and would be awesome in a home with kids. I will take the time to post more about my successes with FeLV+ cats when I am not at work. :) Suffice it to say that it is certainly not a death sentence, and really requires no additional care other than what I recommend for all cats: a premium diet, annual booster shots, indoor living, and prompt veterinary care at the first sign of illness.

Here is Ren:

Ferals no more!!

Dally
It is past time for an update!

My little ferals have been named Rikki, Tikki and Tavi. Matt seems to think we have to call Tavi by his full name of Tavi Tippy Toes! He is so cute - all the way up on tippy tippy toe whenever you scratch his butt! In any case, they had to have names because they can be called feral no more!! I am so excited. Thanks to the loving attention of my DH Matt, and lots of daily interaction, even the ever-fearful Tikki has come around. He voluntarily climbed into my lap yesterday and no longer cowers when you reach to stroke him or pick him up. He is still a bit timid, but it is just a matter of time now! Rikki always was a sweety and Tavi came around faster than I expected. Tikki was the last hold out, and he finally crossed to the light side over the weekend.

Dally had a follow up with the vet on Thursday. Dr Beau is still amazed at his progress. We are scheduling shots sometime in the next week or two for all 4 babies. Dayys tail amputation is on hold until we see how much more control and sensation he can regain. He appears to have gained almost an inch from the base of his tail so far. It may not progress farther, but since the tail is still getting blood flow and not actually dying, we are going to wait and watch some more.

Rikki is the little tabby that has more brown in his face,
Tikki is the tabby that is more grey
Tavi is little black and white boy.

I plan on taking more pictures this week and putting them out here, but here is one to tide you over:

That is Rikki on the left and Tikki on the right - taken...oh my...on June 28th. I am a photo slacker!

Kitten update

Dally
Vacation and all insanity surrounding it have kept me busy! Here is a quick update on all foster babies!

The Boys: Puck, Hunter, and Julian are all healthy, and hopefully getting fixed this week. hunter's prospective parents met their "perfect match" this weekend from another group, so hopefully he will go with Puck to another prospective adopter. The boys are spending a lot of social time loose in the house with us and the resident cats. This has gone remarkably well, except for freaking out our poor Sable. We have finally established her back in the room she has always loved, and she is much more content without anyone else around.

Dally and the ferals: Dally's progress has been remarkable! He has full bowel control and bladder control. He jumps and runs and plays with hardly any sign of his injury other than his tail. He has enough muscle control to make his tail stand up somewhat, but the lower portion of it still has no nerve sensation. It is receiving blood however because it is still "alive" as opposed to rotting. (Thank goodness!) He is on medication for coccidia (stinky poop stuff) but is doing very well.
The ferals are also making great strides in becoming socialized. Now that they over their tummy issues and medication, they are beginning to understand that people are kinda cool. I can play with them all now, and even pick all of them up without scratches or biting, though the most difficult still hisses a bit and hides if he can. I really need to name them all. Apache, Commanche and Cherokee were possible names, but for some reason they don't seem to stick. Kids liked Malfoy, Crabbe and Goyle! Still a possibility. Also Bourbon, Scotch, and Tequila. All 4 babies are loose in the kitten room now instead of in cages. They all romp and play and sleep togetehr. So sweet!
